SuRe® standard
SuRe® standard for sustainable and resilient infrastructure
The SuRe® Standard for Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure, developed by the Global Infrastructure Basel Foundation (GIB), comprises a set of 61 criteria across 14 themes. SuRe® integrates key criteria of sustainability and resilience into infrastructure development and upgrade. A high-level comparison (see below) of SuRe® and the GFC-6 sustainable infrastructure qualities provides an example of how the qualities in the GFC-6 can be found or integrated in the standards and tools that are crucial in encouraging the development of sustainable infrastructure.
In analysing the SuRe® standard using the GFC-6 sustainable infrastructure qualities, it is clear that, in some situations, the GFC-6 can serve as a strong base that can be expanded on and bolstered with additional dimensions. The SuRe® standard includes five additional criteria for those who strive for an even fuller definition of sustainable infrastructure:
- Labour rights and working conditions, e.g. forced labour and modern slavery
- Supply chain risks, e.g. in materials sourcing
- Human rights, e.g. potential violations by contractors
- Cultural heritage, e.g. protection of sacred sites or archaeological finds
- Pre-existing liabilities, e.g. contaminated land or prior land acquisition disputes
The SuRe® standard is a great example of the interaction between the GFC-6 vision and utilitarian tools that progress the development of sustainable infrastructure.
