The Annual Meeting 2020 featured content on six major themes. Click each theme below to explore sessions, articles and speakers related to each theme and read below for coverage highlights.

Beyond Geopolitics

Coverage of gepolitical issues centered around key public figures attending the meeting, including US President Donald Trump, climate activist Greta Thunberg, US Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

How to Save the Planet

Climate change and environmental issues dominated the conversation at Davos and in global coverage about the Annual Meeting.

For example, global media coverage of the conversation on climate change and the Trillion Trees initiative included: Washington Post, Financial Times, Le Monde, CNBC, JiJi News, Asahi Globe, Times of London, Nikkei, AA, La Nacion, Guardian, Barron’s, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, Coindesk, Al Jazeera and Times of India. The Nature Risk Rising report was featured in media including: CNBC, Economic Times, National and Telegraph India.

One of the top social media videos featured participant Gary Bencheghib of Make A Change on his plan to clear trash from Bali’s rivers. The piece racked up nearly 800,000 views across all platforms (Facebook, 204k, Instagram: 338k, LinkedIn 164, Twitter 35, Tiktok 19k). The social video on the Nature Risks Rising report had more than a quarter million views.

Tech for Good

Discussions about technology at the Annual Meeting supported the idea that if governed properly, technology can empower and protect.

The Forum announced the world’s first Global Consortium for Digital Currency Governance (Cointelegraph). Other key announcements included: more sustainable supply chains (Tokenpost); designing central bank digital currency (Cointelegraph, Decrypt); an AI toolkit for corporate boards (Venture Beat, The National; a model AI framework (Straits Times); principles to protect 1 billion Internet users (Economic Times) and our airports (Centre for Aviation) a passwordless future (Security Magazine, Smart Cities World).

On Facebook, a video of Yuval Noah Harari discussing the AI arms race had more than 760,000 views.

Better Business

Many conversations about Davos focused on the role of businesses, with many arguments supporting the idea that capitalism must reform. (Read Klaus Schwab's op-ed on the subject in Foreign Affairs.)

Media covered centered around the Davos Manifesto, as well as the agreement by 140 of the world’s largest companies to develop a core set of common environmental, social and governance (ESG) metrics, which was extensively covered on the live blog and received media coverage including: The Financial Times, The Economic Times, Financial Express and GreenBiz.

Fairer Economies

Addressing global inequality was top of the agenda in Davos, with many sessions and coverage focusing on economic outlooks, the tax debate and efforts to support inclusive economic growth.

As a flagship report, the inaugural Global Social Mobility Report showed why economies benefit from fixing inequality. Influential media mentions included: Zeit, AP, Guardian, Indian Express, Le Figaro, Business Standard, Le Matin, New York Times, Dünya, CNBC, Bloomberg and CNN.

The social media video on the top countries for social mobility was featured on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

Society and the Future of Work

Societal issues including future of work, diversity and inclusion were central to the solutions discussed during the Annual Meeting.

The Reskilling Revolution initiative to equip 1 billion people with education, training and skills received engaged coverage, including The New York Times, Economic Times, Irish Times, City A.M., Yahoo Finance and Indian Express. Complementing this were reports on the Jobs of Tomorrow, Schools of the Future and Principles of Good Platform Work.
