Nature-based solutions have the potential to play a major role in addressing the twin and interlinked environmental crises humanity faces of climate change and nature loss. Interest in such solutions from governments, business and media alike has grown dramatically in recent years. Yet significant barriers are inhibiting their deployment at scale, in particular how investment is linked with inclusive economic benefit, project prioritization for sustainable financing, and how to ensure that nature-based solutions are not “captured” and used an excuse for inaction on rapid decarbonization by high emitters. Next year (2021) will be a crucial year in mainstreaming nature-based solutions, with several key international meetings, including the first ever UN Food Systems Summit, the 15th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) and the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The Global Future Council on Nature-Based Solutions will help build support, unlock more finance and catalyse meaningful action to enable a nature-positive economy.
