This Project Wants to Close Digital Divide at Black Colleges

The US has more than 100 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). They play a vital role in the economy, producing half of all Black attorneys and engineers and 85% of Black doctors. However, 8 out of 10 HBCUs are in broadband deserts where WiFi connectivity is patchy or substandard. Poor internet makes it harder to study, deepening problems of economic inequality. Student Freedom Initiative (SFI) has partnered with Cisco, McKinsey, and Connect Humanity to close the digital gap in one community. It’s rolling out campus-wide 5G at 2 Historically Black Colleges and Universities in South Carolina, Claflin and Orangeburg, South Carolina State University.
