Located in Abu Dhabi's desert landscape, the sprawling facility covers an impressive 21 square kilometers and boasts approximately 4 million solar panels.

In a major stride towards net-zero emissions, the UAE has launched the Al Dhafra Solar PV plant, a sprawling solar facility covering 21 square kilometers in Abu Dhabi's desert.

Equipped with advanced tracking technology, the plant's 4 million solar panels efficiently capture sunlight. Dedicated cleaning robots maintain panel performance by removing sand and dust

UAE's Al Dhafra solar plant

The Al Dhafra Solar PV plant boasts an impressive generating capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW), sufficient to provide carbon-free electricity to over 200,000 homes in the UAE. This remarkable feat not only reduces the country's reliance on fossil fuels but also contributes to a significant reduction in carbon emissions, mitigating over 2.4 million tonnes of CO2 annually.

The plant's timely completion aligns with the UAE's hosting of COP28, the UN Climate Change Conference, from November 30 to December 12, 2023.

An effort for a sustainable future

The development of the Al Dhafra Solar PV plant exemplifies the UAE's commitment to renewable energy and its net-zero goals. The project, spearheaded by Masdar, Abu Dhabi's renewable energy company, TAQA, a global energy and water utility, EDF Renewables, a French renewable energy leader, and Jinko Power Technology, a Chinese solar panel manufacturer, stands as a testament to international collaboration in addressing climate change.
