Only 1% of Land in America’s 35 Largest Cities Is Walkable

These walkable areas generate a whopping 20% of the US GDP. This means walkability is a critical driver of the American economy. Walkable places are those you can easily navigate on foot. Real estate is worth 35-45% more in walkable locations compared to car-dependent places. Walkable areas generate significant tax revenue for cities. But they are 10-20 times cheaper to build, power and maintain than drivable suburbs, saving money on public safety, water and sewage systems and electronic infrastructure. Encouraging walking can also reduce car emissions and improve people’s physical and mental health. Watch to learn more.
