Listen to the Sound of the Universe Through Sonification

NASA scientists have converted astronomical data into soundscapes (depicting the sound of the universe), so we can experience the cosmos with our ears as well as our eyes. This process is called sonification. The scientists translate data from optical, infrared, and x-ray telescopes into separate sounds. The pitch of a note might depend on the wavelength of light, while the light’s brightness might determine its volume. It’s similar to the way scientists create images of the cosmos. We can’t see x-rays or infrared, so this data must be converted into visible light. NASA has tested the soundscapes or the sounds of the universe on blind and visually impaired people as well as on sighted audiences. Watch to learn more about their experience with the sound of the universe, created using sonification.
