Scholar, policy advisor, track-2 activist. Disciplinary specialization in Economics and International Relations, headed the Vienna School of Governance 2007-2008. Regional focus on East Asia, in particular Korea. Focus on IT and Regulation in South Korea, but mostly known for his 25+ years of work on North Korea, a country he visits annually. After positions in Berlin, New York and Seoul now Chair Professor of East Asian Economy and Society, University of Vienna; also Head, Department of East Asian Studies. Was on the GAC on Korea, 2014-2016 as Vice Chair. Publishes lengthy books and scholarly articles, but also enjoys writing crispy short pieces on current issues.
