1983, joined the University of Tokyo: 1998, Full Professor; 2008-14, Director, Photon Science Center; 2012-14, Vice-President; 2013-14, Director, Institute for Photon Science and Technology; former Dean, School of Science; since April 2015, 30th President, with a six-year term. Council Member, Science Council of Japan. Fellow, American Physical Society; Fellow, Optical Society of America. Well-known in the field of photon science; has established world-leading photon research centres in the School of Science and School of Engineering.
