Lisa J. Graumlich is the 2023-2024 AGU President. She was elected to the AGU Board of Directors in 2017 and is a member of the Global Environmental Change and Biogeosciences sections.

Graumlich earned an undergraduate degree in Botany and a master’s degree in Geography from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She earned a doctorate in Forest Resources from the University of Washington. Graumlich has held faculty and leadership positions at the University of California at Los Angeles, the University of Arizona and Montana State University. She is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Ecological Society of America and the Aldo Leopold Leadership Program.

Graumlich’s primary research interests are in paleoecology, and the ways that ecosystems and human societies adapt to climate change, with a special focus on severe and persistent drought. She pioneered the use of tree-ring data to understand long-term trends in climate, focusing on the mountains of western North America.

Graumlich has an interdisciplinary focus and a career-long interest in global climate change, especially regarding how to best manage natural and human resources in an uncertain future, and she speaks frequently on climate change impacts and adaptation. In 2010, she testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming on long-term climate variability.

Graumlich is the first openly LGBTQ+ President of AGU. In 2024 Graumlich was ordained as a deacon in the Episcopal Church. Throughout her career, Graumlich has demonstrated unwavering support for diversity and inclusion and for building bridges between science and society.
