Janet is a leading authority on international law, having practised for many years in New York, Washington, DC and London. She is currently Senior Counsel in Clifford Chance’s Washington, DC office.
Janet specializes in international trade, public international law, and complex international arbitration and litigation. She has advised governments, corporates and financial institutions on trade and investment issues, including on drafting investment-related treaty provisions.
Janet has handled international commercial and investment treaty arbitrations held under the auspices of the key international arbitral institutions. She has represented clients in matters under both U.S. and English law, and is qualified to practice in both jurisdictions.
She has developed a special expertise on climate change issues and has represented clients in matters involving international human rights law and international environmental law. She has advised both UN Special Rapporteurs on Human Rights and the Environment in relation to their mandates, including with mapping the international human rights obligations relating to the enjoyment of a safe, clean, healthy, and sustainable environment.
She has been a Lecturer in International Arbitration at Stanford Law School and taught European Law at University College London. She also sits as arbitrator.
She is a member of the editorial board of the World Trade Review and a member of the Committee of the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice.
Janet previously served as Legal Counsel at the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes at the World Bank where she worked on multiple investment arbitration disputes.
Janet speaks regularly on matters relating to international trade and investment and has appeared on BBC World News to discuss international trade issues.
Janet holds an LL.B. in Law and Italian Law from University College London, an LL.M. in European Legal Studies from the College of Europe, Bruges, and an LL.M. from Columbia University School of Law, where she was a Fulbright Scholar and a Kent Scholar.
Janet is a competitive road runner, having completed several marathons and been awarded a New York Road Runner of the Year Award.
