Young Hearts

Young Hearts (a RHD screening program):Rheumatic Heart Disease is the most common acquired cardiovascular disease afflicting children and young adults. According to the WHO, at least 15.6 million people worldwide are affected by this disease with a significant number of them requiring repeated hospitalizations and heart surgeries in the next 5 – 10 years.  Rheumatic Heart Disease is a consequence of Rheumatic Fever which is seen in children and young adults. Acute Rheumatic fever follows untreated or inadequately treated Streptococcal A infection of tonsillopharynx. This could lead to fibrosis of heart valves. The current RHD screening programs across the world focus on echocardiographic examination to detect valvular defects which is the gold standard for diagnosis of RHD. However, Echocardiography requires the involvement of skilled people and is also expensive both of which are in short supply in the developing countries. An alternative to this process is screening with ViScope which is a visual stethoscope developed by HD Medical Inc. This device allows for the deskilling of the screening process and cuts down the cost a great deal.  Clinical trials have placed the sensitivity and specificity of the device at 93% and 95% respectively. Thus, it can be a good triaging tool for school children on a mass level. The screening will be done in almost all the schools across the hub. Aproximately 200,000 children will be undergoing the screening. The project will be kicked of on 17/12/2014, the country head of HD Medical Inc. is expected do the initial training for shapers of the hub. Later it will be done in all schools of school with the help of volunteers.
