As citizens we are too often disconnected from our political leaders. Once every 3 to 4 years we take to the polls to elect our local government officials. However, the act of voting is too often our only engagement with our city’s mayor and councilors. Furthermore, young citizens under the age of 18 lack any easy avenues of communication with their civic leaders. Rapid urbanization around the world has increased the importance of urban governance, yet residents lack the tools needed to effectively engage in politics. With over half the world’s population living in cities, we need to change the way we view urban governance.
This Is Our Toronto reaches out to Toronto’s residents and asks them to answer the question: How would you make Toronto better? Harnessing the power of technology, our proposal is to create a campaign & a collection of 1 minute videos that answer the question posed. We will then take these videos and share them, not only with our fellow residents, but also the politicians and leaders who run Toronto. The idea is simple. Create a conversation about how we can make our city better.
