ShapePRIDE

About ShapePRIDE:

#ShapePRIDE is the annual PRIDE celebration within the Global Shapers Community (GSC). In partnership with Young Global Leaders, this event campaign marks the month of PRIDE through a summit and a social media campaign. Initiated by the LGBTQI Social Inclusion Lead of the Equity & Inclusion Steering Committee of the GSC, #ShapePRIDE engages the collaboration of Global Shapers hubs, Young Global Leaders (YGLs), and support from Forum staff. Beyond celebrating diversity, #ShapePRIDE engages on the need for LGBTQI equality, inclusion and recognition both within and outside the communities.

Hub activities and impact:

For the inaugural 2020 #ShapePRIDE, Global Shapers from 77+ hubs in 44+ countries engaged in the campaign. The social media campaign was open to the public, while the summit was a closed event (invite-only for Global Shapers, Young Global Leaders, Forum Staff and invited guests). The number of registrants for the summit was 193 and the number of attendees was 110. The reach of the social media campaign culminated to around 101,000 people.

ShapePRIDE vs COVID-19

As a first of its kind, most gatherings and events for PRIDE in 2020 were canceled due to COVID-19. #ShapePRIDE served as the first but also digital alternative to marking PRIDE. The goal was to see that within the YGL and Global Shapers communities (as well as networks and allies), this significant annual tradition for recognizing the inclusion and equality for LGBTQI people is not erased or “invisibilized” by COVID-19. Ultimately, the main message was twofold:

  1. Despite not being able to participate in any parade or a physical event this year, the communities recognized that PRIDE cannot be canceled because it is a feeling, not a physical space, therefore it can be reimagined, and this campaign was one way to show how.

  2. With the COVID-19 pandemic, it was seen that LGBTQI people around the world were disproportionately targeted and victimized and LGBTI rights are witnessing regression. Therefore, there needs to be greater attention given to the plight of LGBTI people, and solidarity with the LGBTQI community, using pictures, conversation and engagement online.
