Marine Litter Segregation Project

The Marine Litter Segregation Project is an initiative by the Thiruvananthapuram Hub in association with multiple stakeholders in the city to clean up the city's beaches, engage the coastal community, and create lasting behavioral change regarding coastal hygiene and sanitation.

The partner organizations in this project include:

  • Sustera Foundation

  • Plastic Fischer

  • Green Worms

  • CleanHub

  • Nordgreen

and counting!

Goals

The main goal is to collect, segregate and dispose of plastic litter along the beaches, with the long-term goal of behavioral change in the communities. Once every few weeks, volunteers head to the beaches in tow with other environmental organizations in the city for two hours of cleaning activities, community interaction, and knowledge-sharing sessions.

The collected plastic is segregated by the partner organizations and sent to processing units to be recycled or disposed.

Impact

  • So far there have been three cleanup activities organized at three different beaches in the city - Shankumugham Beach, Veli Beach, and Poonthura Beach

  • The three cleanup drives have together amounted to 1,200 kg of plastic waste collected and segregated.

  • The hub also forged partnerships with various environmental and private organizations in the city like Sustera Foundation and Plastic Fischer.
