Wynton Marsalis

Artistic Director, Jazz Lincoln Center

Began studying trumpet seriously at age 12. 1979, attended Juilliard School. 1980, became a member of Art Blakley's Jazz Messengers. 1987, co-founded the internationally recognized Jazz at Lincoln Center programme; currently serves as Artistic Director. Composer of countless works of jazz and classical music as well as compositions for dance. Since the beginning of his career, has released over 30 albums. Actively promotes musical awareness, education, and appreciation; programmes include Making the Music (26 part National Public Radio series) and Marsalis on Music (four part public television series). 1997, received Pulitzer Prize for his jazz opera Blood on the Fields. Recipient of numerous other honours and awards.
