Apio Winfred is a gender specialist with 7 years’ progressive experience in the field of sexual
and reproductive health with special focus on gender needs and rights. Additionally, Winfred has a Masters’ degree in Human Rights and Democratization in Africa from the University of Pretoria and a Bachelor’s degree in Community Psychology from Makerere University. She has also attained various certificates from short courses and trainings that traverse from sexual and reproductive health to human rights. These include; community based sexual and reproductive health, peer education trainings, training of trainers, training in clinical management of sexual and gender based violence, advocacy training and trainings in all the various human rights covered in international human rights law.
Winfred has worked with both international and local organizations including government
agencies. Through her work, she has interacted with the local government in Uganda and has
also had experience in working for the Lagos State government in Nigeria, where she was a major contributor to the research and drafting of the guidelines to the first domestic violence fund for victims in Lagos . This was done through her work with the Domestic and Sexual
Violence Response Team in Lagos, Nigeria where she interacted with victims of domestic
violence and worked with and for them to improve on the state of women’s rights in Nigeria. Winfred has also volunteered with various local organizations including Reproductive Health Uganda and worked with sexual reproductive health focussed organizations like Straight Talk Foundation and Uganda Youth and Adolescent Health Forum where she was actively involved in promoting SRHR rights for youth and adolescent girls in vulnerable and hard to reach communities in Uganda. Her passion for advocating for human rights also led her to run a poetry show aimed at using the arts to advocate for social change. Winfred believes strongly in the realization of equal rights for all and her dream is to open up a community based organization that targets improving the access of sexual and reproductive health services to women and young people in Uganda.
