Experience in business, agriculture, law and broadcasting, as well as federal and provincial politics. 1974, elected federal constituency of Assiniboia, Parliament of Canada; 1980s, leader of the Saskatchewan Liberal Party; 1986, elected member, Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly; 1993, MP, Regina-Wascana (now Wascana), House of Commons; Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food; 1997 and 2000, re-elected; 1997-2002, Minister of Natural Resources; 2002, Minister of State and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons; Minister of Public Works and Government Services; 2003, Minister of Finance, 2004, reappointed; regional political responsibilities for Saskatchewan and the North. Other responsibilities: formerly, Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians; Minister responsible, Canadian Wheat Board, Communication Canada, and the Office of Indian Residential Schools Resolution.
