1972, BASc and 1976, MASc, Univ. of British Columbia; 1995, PhD, McGill Univ. More than 35 years' experience as consulting engineer, North and South America and Africa, with projects related to geotechnical engineering, water resources, mining, aboriginal relations, nuclear waste management, energy policy, and the distribution of benefits from resource developments. 1989-92, President, Friends of the Earth, Canada. 1992-96, Member, National Round Table on Environment and Economy; 2001-02, led the North American component of the global project Mining Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD); 2007, appointed Kinross Professor of Mining and Sustainability, Queen's University, Canada. Since Oct. 2008, President, International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM). Has extensively written, spoken and taught on practical application of sustainability concepts.
