PhD in Demography and Social Statistics, University of Chicago. Formerly: Research Fellow, East-West Center; Visiting Professor, California Institute of Technology. Research focuses on population and family changes in Asia and developed countries. Member, Science Council of Japan, chairing subcommittee on population change and economy. Co-Author: Marriage, Work, and Family Life in Comparative Perspective (2004); Jinko Gensho to Nihon Keizai - Population Decline and the Japanese Economy (2009); Prudence and Pressure - Reproduction and Human Agency in Europe and Asia, 1700-1900 (2010).
