1972, BA (Hons) in History, University of Michigan; 1975, JD, University of California, Berkeley Law School. Member, California Bar and Illinois Bar. Former Lawyer, Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal, Chicago. 1978-2009, led Human Rights First, a New York-based human rights advocacy organization. 2009-13, Assistant Secretary of State, Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, State Department, Obama Administration. Played a major role in shaping US policy on issues ranging from refugee and asylum law and policy, national security and human rights, internet freedom, and business and human rights. Currently, Jerome Kohlberg Professor of Ethics & Finance, and Co-Director, Center for Business and Human Rights (the first-ever centre on business and human rights at a business school), Stern School of Business, New York University. Active in several organizations in the field of business and human rights, including the Fair Labor Association, the Global Network Initiative, and the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights. Former Lecturer, Yale Law School; former Visiting Lecturer, Columbia University Law School.
