Chairman of the Board, Basel Institute on Governance

Since 1993, Professor of Criminal Law and Criminology, University of Basel, Switzerland. Founder and Chair, Basel Institute on Governance (BIG); has co-initiated several collective actions, including the Wolfsberg Banking Group and the World Economic Forum’s Partnering Against Corruption Initiative (PACI). Has served twice as Dean of the Basel Law School. 1989-93, Head, Section on Economic and Organised Crime, Swiss Federal Office of Justice; Member of the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering (FATF). 1990-2013, chaired the OECD Working Group on Bribery. 2004 and 2005, Member of the Independent Inquiry Committee into the UN’s Oil-for-Food Programme in Iraq (Volcker Committee). 2008-14, Member of the Independent Advisory Board, World Bank Group. November 2011 - end of 2013, chaired the Independent Governance Committee to oversee the reform process of FIFA. 2013-16, Chairman of the Sanction Appeals Board, African Development Bank (AfDB). Former Member of the Independent Committee to revise the practices of the legal and financial industry in Panama. Member of the Vetting Panel, IAAF. Member, Expert Advisory Group on Transparency, Inter-American Development Bank (IDB/BID). Has published extensively in the areas of economic crime, criminal law, criminal procedure and sanctioning. Recipient, Honorary Doctorate, Sussex University, UK (2014).
