Mamokgethi Phakeng

Vice-Chancellor, University of Cape Town

PhD in Mathematics Education, University of the Witwatersrand. She began her term of office as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Town on 1 July 2018, where she had been serving as Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Internationalisation since January 2017. Previous to this appointment she served as Vice Principal for Research and Innovation at the University of South Africa (Unisa) for five years. Founder, Adopt-a-learner Foundation, a non-profit organization providing financial and educational support to students from township and rural areas to acquire higher education qualifications. Visiting Professor at universities in Australia, Botswana, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, India, Italy, Jamaica, Kenya, Lebanon, Lesotho, Mexico, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Senegal, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and USA. Member, past or present, of various boards and committees. Member, Academy of Science of South Africa; Honorary Member, Golden Key International Honour Society; Honorary Life Member, Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa. 2008, first black South African researcher appointed to co-chair a study commissioned by the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction. Over 80 research papers and seven edited volumes published. Keynote and plenary speaker at international conferences. Recipient of numerous awards and honours, including: Order of the Baobab (Silver) of South Africa (2016); named the most influential woman academic in Africa, CEO magazine (2014); Businesswoman of the Year Award, education category, Businesswomen’s Association of South Africa (2016). In 2019 the University of Bristol conferred on her an Honorary Doctorate in Science in recognition of her leadership role in mathematics education in South Africa.
