Formerly: Special Adviser to the US Ambassador to Japan; Special Adviser to the US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs; first Executive Director, Harvard University's Program on US-Japan Relations; taught for twenty years at Princeton University; Japan Chair, Center for Strategic and International Studies, Washington DC; worked with the US House of Representatives Banking and Currency Committee. Recent publications include: Asia in Washington (2013); The New Continentalism: Energy and Twenty First Century Eurasian Geopolitics (2012); The Making of Northeast Asia (2010); Pacific Alliance (2009); East Asian Multilateralism (2008); and Embattled Garrisons (2007). Author of numerous articles in English and Japanese periodicals. Recipient of awards for his publications.
