BA in Biology, Carleton College; MSc in Microbiology, University of Chicago; PhD in Molecular Biology, University of California, Berkeley. Former: Chief of Staff, National Institutes of Health (NIH); Acting Deputy Director, National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, NIH; Assistant Director, National Human Genome Research Institute, NIH; Founder and Director, Genetics and Public Policy Center, John Hopkins University; Associate Professor, Berman Institute of Bioethics, Institute of Genetic Medicine, and Department of Pediatrics. Currently, Deputy Director, Science, Outreach, and Policy, NIH; leads the science policy, legislation, communication, and outreach efforts and serves as a senior adviser to the NIH director; responsible for creating major new strategic and scientific initiatives and leading the planning and creation of the President’s Precision Medicine Initiative Cohort Program; directs the agency’s efforts to advance biomedical research through policy development, public and stakeholder communication and education, and innovative projects and partnerships. Was a key architect of the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences and the NIH BRAIN Initiative.
