Johanna Mair is Director of the School of Transnational Governance and Chaired Professor at the European University Institute in Florence. She is also Professor of Organization, Strategy, and Leadership at the Hertie School in Berlin (on leave), Co-Director of the Global Innovation for Impact Lab, and Senior Fellow at the Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society at Stanford University. She serves on the boards of foundations, social purpose organizations, and academic institutions, and advises governments, the OECD, and multilateral organizations. Her work explores how governance, strategy, and innovation drive societal transformation. In 2025, she received the Progress Medal from the Society for Progress and is the author of award-winning books and influential scholarly articles.
Previously, she served as Academic Editor of Stanford Social Innovation Review, Co-Director of the Social Innovation and Change Initiative at Harvard Kennedy School, and was recognized by the Aspen Institute as Faculty Pioneer for Social Entrepreneurship Education. She has held faculty and visiting positions at IESE Business School, INSEAD, and Harvard Business School, and earlier worked in international banking with the European Commission.
She holds a PhD and MSc in Management from INSEAD, a postgraduate diploma in International Relations from Johns Hopkins University, and a Master's in Business Administration from WU Vienna University of Economics and Business.
