My research addresses issues of global scale including clean energy and the emergence of cardiovascular and chronic diseases in low-income communities. As background, chronic diseases pose a substantial economic burden to developing countries, creating an urgent need to identify effective solutions to reduce chronic disease and be implemented at a population level. Environmental pollutants, including air pollution, have been shown to contribute to the development of cardiovascular and other chronic diseases, but these associations are often poorly characterized. The central themes of my research agenda are to understand the impacts of pollution on the environment, the factors that influence people’s exposure to environmental pollutants, the impacts of exogenous exposures on health, and sustainable policies and interventions that reduce pollution and resulting human health impacts. I develop innovative measurement techniques and use these methods in conducting empirical studies of air pollution and its health and environmental impacts. My studies comprise novel analytical methods to measure personal exposure to environmental pollution and relate it to health using an interdisciplinary approach.
