Jerry Muller

Professor of History

Economic and intellectual historian; books, articles, and current research are on the border between history, social science, and public policy. He writes and lectures about a variety of historical and contemporary subjects, including capitalism; the family and the market; nationalism; conservatism; the history of social, political, economic, and religious thought. Books include "The Tyranny of Metrics" (2018) and "The Mind and the Market" (2002). Recent essays include "Us and Them: The Enduring Power of Ethnic Nationalism," Foreign Affairs, 2008; "Capitalism and Inequality: What the Right and the Left Get Wrong," Foreign Affairs, 2013. Book in progress, "Planned Grandparenthood: On Thinking Transgenerationally."
