1974, degree in Medicine and 1986, PhD in Medical Science, Uppsala University, Sweden. 1975-83, Physician, Hudiksvall Hospital, Sweden; 1979-81, District Medical Officer, Nacala, Mozambique; 1983-96, Lecturer, International Health and 1990, Associate Professor, Internal Medicine, Uppsala University; since 1997, current position. Co-Founder: Médecins sans Frontières, Sweden; Gapminder Foundation. Member: International Reference Group, Royal Academy of Science. Author of numerous publications including description of konzo, a new epidemic paralytic disease induced by poverty and hunger in parts of rural Africa. Recipient of awards: Certificate of Appreciation, Tanzania Food and Nutrition Centre; Benselius Award, Royal Society of Science; Paedagogical Prize, Karolinska Institute; Hoisma Prize, International Neurotoxicology Association.
