My name is Anisa Amani. I'm a first generation Afghan American from Folsom, California. I'm a first year teacher in the Arden-Arcade area of Sacramento, I have 27 students, 14 are refugees from Afghanistan and two are from Iraq. I am bilingual, I speak English and Farsi fluently. Speaking Farsi is something that has helped me stay connected to my students, their families and the greater refugee community. I enjoy spending time outdoors with friends and family. As a graduate student, at the University of California, Davis, I am working towards a Masters in Education. In my classroom students actively engage in conversations about cultural diversity and how we can build an inclusive environment. This is something that will help my students not only today but in the future. I believe practicing what you preach is the best way to model behavior; therefore, being part of the Global Shapers community is the best way I could show my students how one person has the power to become a movement.
