In an alliance with the Society for the Promotion of Area Resource Centres and Mahila Milan, The National Slum Dwellers Federation has won the Social Entrepreneur Award for 2004. Along with Mahila Milan, it organizes slum dwellers and pavement dwellers in 70 cities in India and 13 countries. Operating for the past three decades, it covers issues such as housing, savings, credit, infrastructure and city development. In Mumbai, it has been organizing the resettlement of over 50,000 households from huts along the railway tracks and footpaths to safe secure tenements across the city. It has also built community toilets covering more than 200,000 people and has a membership of over 500,000 households across India.
