AkoFresh, a social enterprise founded by students, is an intervention to solve the problem of post-harvest losses faced by small-holder farmers. Currently, it is focusing on tomato farming in Ghana which accounts for 38% of national vegetable expenditure. Its technology is an off-grid cold storage preservation unit made of insulated cold room panels comprising solar panels, sensors, a condensing unit and an evaporator to extend the shelf life of fresh crops for up to 21 days. The solution will help grassroots farmers become financially stable and be able to sell off their farm produce at competitive prices compared to previously being pressured into accepting low prices for their yield.
