BA (Hons) Harvard University; Fulbright Scholar, Taiwan. 1998-2004, Bureau Chief and Correspondent, CNN, China and Japan. Taught at the University of Hong Kong and the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Currently directs the Ranking Digital Rights project, New America, evaluating tech companies on their respect for users’ free expression and privacy (rankingdigitalrights.org). Has held fellowships at Harvard’s Shorenstein and Berkman Centers, the Open Society Foundations, Princeton’s Center for Information Technology Policy, and the New America Foundation. Co-Founder, international citizen media network Global Voices. Former Founding Member of the Board, Global Network Initiative. Member of the Board, Committee to Protect Journalists. Author of Consent of the Networked: The Worldwide Struggle For Internet Freedom (2012).
