Carolyn Deere Birkbeck

Dr. Deere Birkbeck’s work aims to promote global economic cooperation better aligned with tackling the world’s environmental sustainability challenges and development priorities. Her research focuses on a future agenda for trade and sustainability; transforming the global plastics economy; and the governance of international organisations. Carolyn is a Senior Researcher at the Graduate Institute’s Global Governance Centre, an Associate Fellow of Chatham House’s Hoffmann Centre for Sustainable Resource Economy and a Senior Research Associate at the University of Oxford's Global Economic Governance Programme She is the founder and Board Chair of Global Policy Reporting, a Geneva-based non-profit organisation dedicated to open access, independent news reporting, which publishes Health Policy Watch and Intellectual Property Watch. She previously worked at the Rockefeller Foundation. Her books include The Governance of WIPO: A Reference Guide (Edward Elgar Press, 2016); Making Global Trade Governance Work for Development: Perspectives and Priorities from Developing Countries (Cambridge University Press 2011), The Implementation Game: The TRIPS Agreement and the Global Politics of Intellectual Property Reform in Developing Countries (Oxford University Press 2009), and Greening the Americas: NAFTA’s Lessons for Hemispheric Trade (MIT Press 2002, co-edited with Dan Esty). An Australian and British national, she holds a DPhil in International Relations (University College, Oxford), an MA in International Relations (Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies) and a BEc in political economy from the University of Sydney.
