These UK Supermarkets Ditching The Best Before Labels

Best before labels are designed to indicate food quality, unlike use by dates which are a safety measure to prevent food poising. From September, Waitrose will join a number of other UK supermarket chains in removing best before labels on 500 types of produce, from tomatoes to grapes, apples, and cucumbers. It wants customers to use their own judgments about whether a wrinkly grape or wilted lettuce can still be rescued. Here’s how removing best before labels from all produce could save 7 million shopping baskets from landfill.
