This Underground Farm In London Used To Be An Air Raid Shelter

This underground farm is 33 meters below a Clapham, south London street. In WWII, the tunnels were used as a shelter from bombs. Now they grow peashoots, rocket, and watercress for local restaurants and major retailers such as Marks & Spencer. The produce from this underground farm can be on Londoners’ plates within 2 hours of harvesting, racking up hardly any food miles in the process. Owner Zero Carbon Farms plans to double the farm’s growing space in 2023. Vertical farms like this could help guarantee food security.
