Green Trade

As governments and business grapple with the effects of COVID-19, other global challenges remain. Once the immediate pandemic crisis abates, countries must intensify environmental action to tackle climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss, alongside restarting their economies. Trade policy could play a vital role in delivering on these environmental goals.

Many companies are transforming their supply chains to be greener. Yet, firms say domestic economic or environmental policies do not always facilitate sustainable trade, and international dialogue is largely absent or siloed.

How can trade be used to help rebuild a greener global economy following the crisis?

This scoping exercise will focus initially on identifying barriers to advancing a global circular economy (including plastic and e-waste); pinpointing trade measures to support climate action; and championing a global deal on harmful fisheries subsidies negotiations.
