The Global Road Safety Initiative seeks to address the health and development impact of dangerous roads, with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries: despite only accounting for half the world’s vehicles, ninety per cent of the world’s annual 1.25 million road related fatalities occur in these countries, and the numbers continue to rise rapidly along with rates of motorization.
The initiative will commence with a pilot project to establish a Road Safety Partnership for India (RSPI), the learnings from which will serve as a Global Blueprint to guiding policy development, actions and road safety partnership development in other emerging economies, which face comparable challenges to India. The RSPI will aim to improve road safety in India by facilitating cooperation between key health and mobility stakeholders (public, private and civil society), while also seeking engagement from other interested industry groups. Its initial focus will be on developing a sustainable governance model, securing commitment toward road safety from industry and government players, and aligning stakeholders on the data collection and sharing needs to inform better policies and practices.
This project is a joint venture in collaboration with the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA).
