AI and Ageing

How should technologists, academia, design thinkers and civil society come together to accelerate the development and adoption of human-centred AI that promotes autonomy, safety, well-being and dignity of older adults?

The challenge

Driven by declining fertility and increased longevity, the number of older adults is growing faster than any other age group and is estimated to reach over 1.5 million by 2050. Given the projected growth of the older population, which will occur in virtually every country, governments, health systems and private sector should prepare to address the needs of the older population.

Artificial Intelligence (e.g., assistive robots, self-driving vehicles, voice assistants, intelligent homes) has the potential to help address key ageing-related challenges including the desire to age in place, care-giver burden including the shortage of professional caregivers, diminished mobility, financial wellness, sense of purpose, health and end of life. However, these technologies should be designed with intention, and consider privacy and consent, balance the needs of autonomy and safety, protect data against misuse, minimize social isolation, as well as risks of over-reliance and system failures, to name a few

The opportunity

The project brings together diverse stakeholders, including academia, industry players, senior care organizations, design thinkers and civil society, to unlock AI opportunities that can meet the needs of an ageing population in a responsible manner. The project focuses on three core objectives:

1. Promote the use of AI in overcoming key ageing-related challenges

2. Create a council comprising older adults and caregivers to enable human-centred AI development

3. Create guidelines that will enable the responsible use of AI by addressing questions such as biases in datasets, privacy and consent, social isolation, transparency, and complacency
