Country Transitions and Benchmarking

Country Transition and Benchmarking is one of the challenges identified by the World Economic Forum Platform for Shaping the Future of Energy and Materials.

The world’s transition to secure, affordable, reliable and sustainable energy has stalled, with little or no progress achieved in the past five years. Accelerating energy transition requires faster progress on all fronts, including research and deploying technology, investment, individual-level participation, and formulating and implementing effective policy. Given the scale and complexity of energy transition, and its interdependencies across different systems, no stakeholder group or organization can tackle this challenge alone.

Objective

This initiative aims to increase the speed of adoption of effective public policies and corporate decisions and to facilitate collaboration across energy ecosystem actors, accounting for existing interdependencies.

Projects

·       Energy transition index

The index provides a framework to benchmark and support countries in their energy transition efforts considering their current energy system performance, and the readiness of their macro-economic, social and regulatory environment for energy transition. The index benchmarks 125 countries across 40 indicators. The most recent edition of the index was launched in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy of Thailand. The next edition will be published in Q1 2020.

·       Energy transition narrative

This project's goal is to create and communicate a clearer and fact-based narrative on where the world stands in energy transition. This piece will build on the ideas developed by The Global Future Council on Energy’s stream on “The State of Energy Transition” comparing different scenarios for the future and their underlying differences and other trusted sources i.e. the World Energy Outlook.

The approach to Energy Transition also leverages the Future of Electricity initiative. This workstream is already facilitating the creation of public-private collaboration in several countries to advance dialogue and produce recommendations for policy, regulation and infrastructure for transforming the electricity system.
