The global, multisectoral Coalition for Access to NCD Medicines & Products (Coalition) is dedicated to increasing access to essential medicines and health products (EMPs) for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) to reduce the impact of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. The Coalition launched in 2017 with the stated goal of achieving or exceeding the World Health Organization’s (WHO) target of 80 percent availability of the affordable basic technologies and essential medicines, including generics, required to treat major NCDs in both public and private facilities.
The Coalition’s goal and areas of emphasis (health systems strengthening, supply chain strengthening, finance and costing, and advocacy) build off extensive member-wide discussions dating back to 2014, evaluation of WHO recommendations, Sustainable Development Goals, the No Empty Shelves project and the resulting Global Landscape Report that highlighted the urgent need to address access to EMPs for NCDs. Through technical support, advocacy, and resource mobilization, the Coalition works with ministries of health (MoH) to address barriers and identify opportunities to strengthen procurement, supply, distribution, and rational use of needed products.
