Wopke Hoekstra

Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero and Clean Growth, European Commission

Wopke Hoekstra is the European Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero and Clean Growth in the Von der Leyen II Commission since 1 December 2024. Before that, he was Commissioner for Climate Action in the von der Leyen I Commission from October 2023 to December 2024, with additional temporary portfolio responsibility for transport since July 2024. Before this, Hoekstra was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Rutte IV cabinet and Minister of Finance in the Rutte III cabinet. From 2011 to 2017, he was a member of the Dutch Senate.
Hoekstra studied law at Leiden University and LUISS Guido Carli in Rome and holds an MBA from INSEAD in Fontainebleau. Before becoming a minister, he was a partner at McKinsey in Amsterdam. He started his career at Royal Dutch Shell in Berlin and Hamburg.
