1977-82, studied veterinary medicine and 1985, PhD, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich. 1985, started career at the International Atomic Energy Agency. 1987, moved to the German Animal Health Federation, a member association of the German Chemical Industry Association. Worked for the US pharma company MSD, serving as President, Emerging Markets. Other positions included member of senior management and corporate officer with responsibility for the business in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Canada; Senior Vice-President in charge of Worldwide Human Health Marketing as well as Vice-President of Europe and the German business. 2011, joined Merck as Chief Executive Officer, Biopharma division and Member of the Executive Board. Led the transformation of Biopharma. 2013-14, was responsible for the Healthcare business sector of Merck. Oversaw the Biopharma, Consumer Health, Allergopharma, and Biosimilars businesses. Former Vice-Chairman and Deputy Chief Executive Officer and since May 2016, Chairman of the Executive Board and Chief Executive Officer, Merck.
