Neema Kaseje

Humanitarian Surgeon and Health Leader, Médecins Sans Frontières

Dr Neema Kaseje is an internationally recognized humanitarian surgeon, health leader, and an expert in health systems strengthening serving rural communities and populations affected by conflict including refugees. Her most recent activities focus on deploying innovative health financing mechanisms to achieve universal health coverage in communities that have historically been left behind. She is an expert in building pediatric surgical care delivery with previous experience in Haiti, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Nicaragua, and Liberia. In Haiti, she served as the only pediatric surgeon in the public sector and scaled up pediatric surgical care delivery in the region by training junior doctors. In Liberia, she was part of the Doctors without Borders team that built the first Doctors Without Borders pediatric surgical program. She established the first pediatric operating room in a refugee camp in Kakuma Refugee Camp - a project launched during the Davos 2020 Annual meeting. She has extensive experience deploying innovative health solutions to leapfrog access to lifesaving health services leveraging youth, community health workers (CHWs), and digital technology. In Siaya Kenya, she worked with >1000 CHWs, 200 youth, to complete >300’000 digital household health visits with significant reductions in COVID-19 related deaths. She is the Founding Director of the Surgical Systems Research Group based in Kisumu, Kenya. She is committed to global health equity and achieving health for all by 2030. She was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2017.
