Professor of Economics and Founding Director, Access to Knowledge for Development Center (A2K4D), American University in Cairo’s School of Business. Teaching, research and advocacy focus on advancing role of knowledge and technology as drivers for human development. Research interests lie in the economics of knowledge, technology and human development with focus on digital platforms, entrepreneurship, innovation, data, intellectual property and business models in the digital economy, with emphasis on Egypt, the Arab world and Africa. Leads the Open Data for Development Node for the Middle East and North Africa, and co-directs the Open African Innovation Research Partnership. Faculty Associate, Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society; Affiliated Fellow, Yale Law School’s Information Society Project; Associate Member, University of Ottawa’s Centre for Law, Technology and Society; Affiliated Faculty, Harvard Law School’s Copyrightx course. Member: Executive Committee, International Economic Association; World Economic Forum Global Future Council on the New Economic Agenda. Member, National Academy of Scientific Research and Technology Committee on Alternative Innovation Assessment in Egypt. Recipient of awards and honours. PhD in Economics, McMaster University, Canada; MA and BA in Economics, American University in Cairo. Taught at Yale Law School, Columbia University and the University of Toronto.
