Bachelor's in International Relations, University of Sussex, United Kingdom; Master's in International Relations, Johns Hopkins University. Since 1979, has served as an international civil servant in the United Nations, starting in Geneva with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Then served in different capacities in New York, Iran, Mexico and Haiti. 1997-2001, Head of the Office of the Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs, UN Headquarters, New York. 2001-06, Director for Political, Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Affairs, Office of the Secretary-General; concurrently, 2004-06, Deputy Chief of Staff. 2006-08, Secretary-General's Special Representative for Cyprus. 2008-11, Executive Director, Kofi Annan Foundation. Currently, Director-General, United Nations Office at Geneva, and Secretary-General, United Nations Conference on Disarmament.
