Lourdes Melgar Palacios

Lourdes Melgar is Research Affiliate at the Center for Collective Intelligence of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she was the 2016-17 Robert E. Wilhelm Fellow. She is a non-resident Fellow at the Center of Energy of the Baker Institute at Rice University. Dr. Melgar is on the board of CEMEX, Smurfit Kappa Group, Banco Santander México, of the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet, NRGI and Chapter Zero Mexico.
From February 2014 to July 2016, Dr. Melgar served as Mexico's Vice-Minister of Energy for Hydrocarbons and was a member of the Board of Directors of Pemex. From December 2012 to February 2014, she held the position of Vice-Minister for Electricity and served on the Board of CFE. During her tenure, she played a key role in the design, negotiation and implementation of Mexico’s energy reform. Previously, she held various positions in Mexico´s Foreign Service.

Dr. Melgar was Founding Director of the Center for Sustainability and Business at EGADE Business School of the Tecnológico de Monterrey. She has been a visiting scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and at the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas. A magna cum laude graduate from Mount Holyoke College, she holds a PhD in Political Science from MIT.

Lourdes Melgar is a member and former President of the Mexican Chapter of the International Women’s Forum, a member of the Trilateral Commission, of the Mexican Council on Foreign Relations (COMEXI).

She received the Mujer de Retos Award in 2015 and has been named to the list of 100 most influential people in Mexico´s energy sector seven times. She won the Logro Energético Award and was the recipient of the Vasco de Quiroga Citizen´s Leadership Award both in 2012. She has been included in Forbes’ list of 100 Most Powerful Women in Mexico in 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023.

Dr. Melgar is a passionate traveler, enjoys cooking, reading and hiking.
She is married and has a teenage daughter and four step children.
