Andrew Welchman is Head of Neuroscience and Mental Health at Wellcome. He has over 20 years of research experience in the academic sector (most recently at the University of Cambridge). His research expertise is in advanced human brain imaging, computational modelling and artificial intelligence approaches. He has published over sixty research papers in top academic journals, and is an internationally recognised authority on the human visual system. Andrew has run several large international research consortia, won significant funding to support his research, and worked in the UK and Germany. His role at Wellcome involves determining the funding strategy for a £500M portfolio of projects that span a wide range of approaches in Neuroscience and Mental Health. He regularly works to engage across disciplines and sectors, engaging other international funding agencies, government bodies and multinational companies. He recently led Wellcome’s development for a new multimillion pound initiative on changing the landscape for mental health, with particular reference to young people.
