1970, BA, Psychology, 1974, MD, Northwestern University; 1979, Medical Residency and Fellowship in Cardiology, University of California, Los Angeles. Board-certified cardiologist. Former faculty member and 2003-06, President, University of Iowa; co-founded the Adolescent and Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic. 2006-15, President, Cornell University. Currently, Thirteenth Secretary of, and first physician to lead, the Smithsonian Institution. Research focus is congenital heart disease and cardiac imaging and image processing. Pioneered applying computer analysis and processing techniques to cardiac imaging; published two major texts and numerous articles, reviews and book chapters on cardiac imaging and image processing. Since 1980, part of a cohort of physicians around the world who specialize in caring for adolescents and adults with congenital heart disease. Professor, Departments of Medicine and Paediatrics, Weill Cornell Medical College, New York City and Department of Biomedical Engineering , Cornell’s College of Engineering. Founder, International Society for Adult Congenital Heart Disease. Fellow, National Academy of Medicine, American Academy of Arts and Sciences; elected Member, American Philosophical Society. Life Member, Council on Foreign Relations. Distinguished Professor, Georgetown University. Avid amateur musician.
